Another habit may be chewing gum. Chewing gum is a simple yet effective habit that can ease your stress, keep you occupied, or simply cure a simple sweet tooth. With so many options of chewable delights to choose from, sometimes the options can be overwhelming, but they all work to deliver a healthier smile. Chewing gum increases the production of saliva in your mouth, and that increase can neutralize and eliminate the acids and leftover food particles in your mouth after you eat. This also leads to a lower risk of plaque and tartar buildup, as the bacteria will not have enough time to stay in your mouth and attach themselves to your teeth.

Also, chewing gum, along with the increased saliva production, carries more calcium and phosphate, both of which help build stronger tooth enamel, meaning a healthier smile. Studies have shown that chewing gum for at least twenty minutes after eating a meal helps prevent tooth decay, which can really make a difference down the road in regards to your smile.

So the next time you put a piece of gum in your mouth, you will be able to relish in the fact that it is doing wonders for your smile! It is important to keep in mind that a sugar free xylitol based gum be preferred, as sugar-based gums can cause cavities and other types of decay! Though it may not seem important, taking advantage of your dental insurance before the year ends can save you money in the long run. Because most insurance companies run off of the calendar year, whatever benefits you haven’t used before midnight December 30 is long gone.

Not comparable to your cell phone minutes, your dental insurance benefits don’t roll over to the new year if you have not used them. You work hard for your benefits, and not taking advantage of them before the year is up can possible leave you wasting hundreds of dollars. If you use your benefits before the New Year, you’ll be able to take advantage of your deductible before it resets. It’ll also give you the ability to use up your annual maximums. Another important reason is to take care of any dental woes before they get any worse! Even though it may seem like a small stain or discomfort now, along the line, it can possibly mean a more extensive procedure.

If you are unsure about what your dental benefits may be or when they expire, ask your employer, or use the company handbook as a reference. Either way, being able to use your dental benefits before the year ends is beneficial for your money, and, more importantly, your teeth.

The Importance of Flossing

July 15, 2013

While we all know that it’s important to floss our teeth daily, that doesn’t mean we’re all doing it. It’s really important to make sure you floss because flossing removes food particles stuck between your teeth that can contribute to decay.

Flossing is an important part of general dentistry and can help keep your smile healthy. When you come visit us at Giamberardino Dental Care for your dental checkup we can answer any questions you might have about flossing and can demonstrate the proper technique.  Plaque can build up between your teeth and can harden into calculus or tartar. Over time this could lead to decay or even gum disease, so it’s important to floss regularly.

This article from the ADA (American Dental Association) has some helpful tips on the proper flossing technique. If you have trouble getting in between your teeth with the floss, a floss threader or disposable pre-threaded flosser can be helpful. These are all found at drugstores.

Take time now to properly take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing and you’ll have a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime. At your next visit we’ll even give you some floss to help get started! If you have any questions about flossing, just give us a call.

VELscope Oral Cancer Screening For Oral Health

May 2, 2013

Oral cancer is a serious threat to your overall health. One American dies from oral cancer every hour. It’s important to visit us at Giamberardino Dental Care so that we can check you for signs of oral cancer with a VELscope exam.

The danger in oral cancer is that most cases are not discovered until later on, so the issue has been allowed to spread. The sooner it’s discovered, the greater the chances it can be treated. We recommend all our patients have a VELscope oral cancer exam once a year.

VELscope technology allows us to quickly and comfortably check you for signs of oral cancer. The screening uses a special light that illuminates cells that are abnormal or cancerous so they can clearly be seen. This is a simple test that can be extremely important for your health.

You may think that just because you don’t smoke, you’re not at risk. However this isn’t true, for 25 percent of oral cancer cases are people who are non-smokers and don’t have other risk factors for the disease. Besides smoking, other risk factors include daily alcohol use, HIV, diabetes, and viral infections.

Oral cancer is something that should be taken seriously because it can affect anyone. Give us a call today to learn more about the risk factors or to schedule a VELscope exam.

Finding a Mouthwash That’s Right for You

September 13, 2012

When dentists talk about oral care, brushing and flossing get most of the attention, while mouthwash may only get mentioned once in a while. That can make it hard to know if using a mouthwash is really all that important. Or, maybe you already know it is, but you don’t know what kind of mouthwash you should pick.

In today’s post, we’d like to take a look at both of these concerns and offer some advice you might find helpful the next time you feel lost in your grocery store or pharmacy’s oral hygiene aisle.

Is it important to use a mouthwash?

Because everyone’s smile is different, we can only answer this question very broadly by saying yes, it is. Of course, brushing and flossing will always be the most effective means of keeping teeth clean, but a good antibacterial mouthwash can give your smile extra protection and can potentially reach corners of your smile that are hard to brush consistently. But even though a mouthwash is like an extra layer of protection, you should never think of it as an alternative to regular care. Brushing and flossing should always come first.

What kind of mouthwash should I choose?

The answer to that question will depend on what your needs are, but a general rule of thumb is to look for an antibacterial mouthwash. That’s because antibacterial mouthwashes are designed to combat bacteria and plaque and protect gums from gingivitis.

But an antibacterial mouthwash isn’t the only option out there. Some mouthwashes use fluoride to help patients strengthen teeth and protect them from decay. Others are used to minimize bad breath, sensitivity, or the appearance of teeth stains. Still others are made to treat symptoms of dry mouth. So to answer that question, you have to know what your individual needs are first.

If you’ve given the question some thought but you still aren’t sure, you can always ask Dr. Giamberardino or a member of our Giamberardino Dental Care team to recommend one to you. We’re always ready to help our patients from Medford, Winchester, Somerville, Malden, Everett, and beyond. Call us today with your questions or to schedule an appointment.
