Continue reading to learn more about your cosmetic options and what you can expect them to feel like.

What Does Cosmetic Dentistry Feel Like?

At lot of patients fear pain when they go to the dental office. The good news is that your dental team will do everything in their power to make you feel as comfortable as possible in the dental chair. Most cosmetic treatments are non-invasive. For some, a local anesthetic is administered ahead of time, so you shouldn’t feel a thing. If there is anything you need to feel more at ease during your treatment, all you need to do is ask.

Which Cosmetic Dental Treatments Are Available?

Cosmetic dentistry involves little to no discomfort. Here are some of the most common ones that are available:

  • Tooth-Colored Fillings: If you have a tooth that is decayed or some old, unsightly metal amalgam fillings, you can repair the appearance and function of your tooth with a tooth-colored filling. Made from composite resin, tooth-colored fillings are color-matched to blend in with your surrounding teeth, leaving you with a natural appearance. Your dentist will numb the area ahead of time, so this procedure should be completely painless.
  • At-Home Teeth Whitening: Unlike over-the-counter teeth whitening kits, professional teeth whitening is customized to meet your needs. Some patients experience minor sensitivity following their treatment, but this will subside after a short period of time. If you are prone to tooth sensitivity, let your dental know.
  • All-Ceramic Restorations: Many dental restorations used to be made from metal. While they are durable and long-lasting, they don’t look natural. All-ceramic restorations can be used to build up and protect your damaged teeth and replace older restorations. Before your tooth is prepared for your restoration, the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel any pain.
  • Veneers: Veneers are usually placed in two separate appointments. During the first one, your dentist will prepare your teeth by filing down a minimal portion of your enamel to make sure that the veneers lay flaw and aren’t bulky. For this portion of your treatment, you will receive a local anesthetic. After your teeth are prepped, impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab. During your next visit, your permanent veneers are placed. You may experience some soreness and sensitivity for a few days afterward, but this should be mild and temporary.

Don’t let fear get in the way of your dream smile. With the help of your dental team, you should have a comfortable treatment free of pain.
